Living with psoriasis is more than just managing physical symptoms; it also takes a significant emotional and psychological toll. The unpredictability of flare-ups, the visible nature of the condition, and the social stigma associated with it can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, and even depression. Through my own journey with psoriasis, I have experienced the emotional highs and lows firsthand. Here, I want to share my insights on how to cope with these challenges and find emotional resilience.

The Weight of Anxiety

When my psoriasis first covered nearly 95% of my body, I constantly worried about how others perceived me. Anxiety crept in whenever I had to meet new people or attend social events. The fear of judgment and the embarrassment of visible flares made me self-conscious, often leading me to cancel plans or hide beneath layers of clothing.

One of the biggest breakthroughs in managing my anxiety came from shifting my mindset. I learned to control what I could—moisturizing regularly, sticking to a treatment plan, and practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing and my “Time w/ the Lord”. Over time, I began to accept that while I couldn’t always control my skin, I could control how I reacted to it.

The Overwhelming Stress

Stress and psoriasis go hand in hand in a vicious cycle—stress triggers flare-ups, and flare-ups increase stress. During particularly challenging times, such as when I was juggling multiple jobs, I noticed my symptoms worsening. The pressure of keeping up with responsibilities while battling fatigue and pain left me physically and emotionally drained.

To break this cycle, I had to prioritize self-care. I put Zumba into my routine again, which helped relieve tension while keeping me active. I also restructured my schedule, making time for rest and activities that brought me joy, such as writing and connecting with supportive communities.

The Shadow of Depression

There were moments when my psoriasis journey felt isolating. The persistent nature of the condition, the failed treatments, and the uncertainty of what the future held led me into episodes of deep sadness. I often questioned, “Why me?” and felt as though I was losing control of my body and my life.

It was during these moments that seeking support made all the difference. Talking to my husband and friends about my struggles, engaging in online support groups, and even writing about my experiences helped me process my emotions.

Finding Strength in the Journey

Coping with the emotional burden of psoriasis is an ongoing process, but I’ve learned that resilience comes from embracing my journey rather than resisting it. Accepting my condition, focusing on the aspects of life that bring me fulfillment, and surrounding myself with a supportive community have been crucial in maintaining my mental well-being.

If you are struggling with anxiety, stress, or depression due to psoriasis, know that you are not alone. There is strength in seeking help, in sharing your story, and in finding ways to nurture your emotional health. Psoriasis may be a part of our lives, but it does not define us. Together, we can rise above the challenges and live empowered, fulfilling lives.
